Alfred Wainwright, the Coronation Street fan
Famous fell walker Alfred Wainwright turns out to have been a huge Coronation Street fan.
In a new book about Alfred Wainwright, it is suggested that he balked at any any outing that would involve him missing an episode of his beloved Coronation Street.
And, the writer of the book says, "He absolutely had to know the latest Blackburn Rovers score (and latest Coronation Street plot)."
I love these quotes, I really do. I can just imagine Alfred Wainwright striding across the fells or the pennines. He'd stop awhile, to write up his notes in his book about conditions underfoot, perhaps. And while there, he'd ponder about Elsie Tanner's latest fella and what a rum do it all was.
I don't know about you, but whenever I find out that someone famous is a fan of Coronation Street, it just makes me like them a little bit more.
You can read the full interview in The Guardian if you'd like to.

What a lovely warm article, FN. Thanks for posting that. Not only was Wainwright a Corrie fan, watching the show really was one of the few items in his daily schedule that varied away from his fell walks and his amazing book writing.
The photo linked in the article to his 'best square mile' around Castle Crag just made my day. Imagine him being in those places every day.
